Using WhatFishIsThis

WhatFishIsThis is a free website that suggests which fish species a photo shows. By using it you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

Free scans and fair use

  • Each visitor gets 5 free scans a day (by UTC day), with up to 20 tries in all. Asking for a second opinion on a scan is free.
  • Please do not try to get around the daily limit, send automated requests, upload images that are not yours to share, or upload anything illegal or harmful.
  • We may change the number of free scans, pause the service or refuse requests that abuse it.

Results are suggestions, not facts

  • Identifications come from AI models. Some look-alike relationships come from iNaturalist community identification records. Reviewed distinguishing features and credited comparison photos are available for some species; unreviewed features are marked, and not every species has a guide. Both identifications and community records can be wrong, especially between closely related species.
  • Do not rely on a result to decide whether a fish is legal to keep, safe to eat or safe to handle. Check the fish yourself and follow your state's or country's official fishing regulations.
  • Except for the limited Florida check described below, the site links to official size, bag and season rules. It does not give advice about eating or handling fish.

Your photos and your collection

You keep all rights to the photos you upload. You allow us to send each photo to our AI providers for the single purpose of identifying the fish, as described in the Privacy Policy. Your collection is stored only in your own browser, and you are responsible for keeping it; clearing your browser data deletes it.

Look-alike photos

The look-alike photos come from iNaturalist contributors and are used under the CC0 or CC BY licence named next to each photo, with the author and source credited. They have been resized. Those photos remain the property of their authors.

No warranty

The site is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage that comes from using the site or relying on its results.

Changes

We may update these terms. The current version is always on this page, with its date.

Limited Florida rules check

For selected Bonefish, Flounder and Spanish Mackerel species in ordinary Florida state saltwater, the free checker compares your confirmed catch details with a dated snapshot of size, bag and season limits. A conditional result is a partial check, not permission to keep a fish. You must still verify identification, license or exemption, lawful gear, local and temporary restrictions, and the current official rules. Federal waters, freshwater, special areas and other species or states are not covered. Rules older than 30 days require a fresh check at the official source.
